Is Karndean Flooring Safe for Families?
Yes, Karndead flooring is safe for families. While Karndean may not be easy on your wallet, safety is one of their main priorities.
Below, we’ll take a brief look at different aspects that makes this flooring family-friendly.
Waterproof
Luxury vinyl planks (LVPs) withstand water damage. They outperform laminate and real wood flooring.
Unlike hardwoods and laminate flooring, Karndean’s vinyl plank flooring doesn’t easily suffer from water damage. They don’t crack, or expand and contract from brief exposure to water.
Even though these floors are resistant to water damage, it’s not impossible. Major flooding or prolonged water contact can make these floors crack and warp.
Scratch and Scuff Resistant
All Karndean Designflooring is scratch and scuff-resistant. A 20 to 30-mil thick wear layer protects it from damage.
Like all floors, you can scratch these floors, if you don’t protect and maintain them properly.
Using carpets and rugs without rubber backing, and placing furniture on felt pads, reduces the chances of your floor getting scratched and scuffed.
Kid and Pet-Friendly
Karndean’s vinyl plank flooring is kid and pet-friendly.
The FloorScore badge certifies that these floors don’t off-gas and contain few volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The K-Guard+® surface protection works as a barrier against scratches from pets. Keeping your pets’ nails short ensures that they don’t scratch your flooring deeply.
Kids and toddlers play on the floor a lot, and Karndean’s vinyl flooring is comfortable and warm to the touch. This assures you that your child is safe and happy on the floor.
Easy to Clean
Karndean’s vinyl plank flooring is easier to clean than some other brands of vinyl flooring. The brand’s K-Guard+® finish provides a durable and easy-to-clean finish.
Karndean produces a cleaning formula, Karndean Clean, for cleaning their floors. Any pH-neutral, fragrance-free floor cleaner works well when cleaning these vinyl floors.
A good mop for vinyl is effective at cleaning spills and dust. Be careful to use a damp mop, but never a wet one, as you may leave puddles behind unintentionally.
These floors are stain-resistant, and you can remove tough stains like coffee and wine with a pH-neutral cleaner.
Made With Safe Materials
Karndean doesn’t compromise when it comes to the manufacturing process. All their vinyl plank flooring is partially recyclable to reduce long-term waste.
Third-party testing, like FloorScore, ensures that the flooring has low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is free from toxic chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and formaldehyde.
These floors contain no carcinogens, reprotoxic, or endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
The main raw material in these floors is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It’s a safe product, mainly used in the construction sector.
Unlike hardwood flooring or carpets, Karndean vinyl plank flooring doesn’t collect dirt, dust, and other debris.
Since they don’t need expansion gaps, Karndean’s vinyl flooring products have little to no spaces between the planks and tiles.
With hardwood and tile flooring, the small gaps left for expansion and contraction can trap dirt and dust. They also trap moisture and may cause the floor to wobble and warp.
Karndean Price List
Karndean Flooring is a premium brand, and has higher prices than some other brands on the market.
Karndean vinyl planks have a price that varies between $3 and $9 per square foot.
The Art Select and Da Vinci ranges are Karndean’s high-range products. They cost over $5 per square foot.
The cost of Karndean Looselay, Van Gogh, and Korlok ranges between $3 and $6 per square foot. These three are the moderately-priced ranges.
For people on a budget, the Opus and Knight Tile ranges are the most affordable options. These floors cost about $2 to $4 per square foot.
Expensive products may have thicker wear layers and increased durability. Products with Karndean’s cheapest prices may have less durability and scratch-resistance.
These prices are only for the vinyl plank flooring itself. If you pay for installation, the price will increase significantly. Expect to pay between $5 and $12 per square foot for installation.
Karndean Floor Warranties
Karndean Flooring has good warranty terms and conditions.
Their vinyl plank flooring is high-quality and durable. The company has faith in its products and provides a lifetime residential warranty for each product.

Is Karndean Flooring Worth the Money?
Most customers agree that Karndean Flooring is worth the money.
These floors are waterproof, and can withstand liquid spills. They’re also sturdy, durable, and can withstand heavy foot traffic.
All Karndean products are kid-friendly, pet-friendly, and made of safe materials. All floors go through third-party tests such as FloorScore and BRE Global Green Guide.
Karndean offers many designs and colors in their vinyl flooring ranges, varying between rustic and modern designs that complement decors of all sorts.
The premium, mid-range, and budget-friendly ranges undergo the same manufacturing process. However, premium ranges are more durable thanks to a thicker wear layer.
However, as with any established brand, you’ll find both good and bad Karndean luxury vinyl reviews.
One of the Karndean Van Gogh flooring reviews from The United Kingdom says:
“We have floor-to-ceiling windows in our lounge which let in loads of light and has a greenhouse effect in summer and there is no noticeable color change after over 10 years, unlike the sofa which has bleached badly. Our kitchen floor has been down for over 15 years and looks as good as new, I’ve never had to do anything to it other than wash it.”
Negative reviews about Karndean Flooring typically target their claims of scratch and dent-resistance. Some customers say that these floors damage quite easily.
One of the Karndean Loose Lay vinyl plank flooring reviews from the United Kingdom discusses this issue in detail:
“The flooring should come with a warning – Do Not Purchase. My advice would be to steer clear of this brand. The quality is shocking. I’m constantly on pins if anybody happens to enter the house with their shoes on as it scratches so easily, I dread to think how it will look in a few years’ time. Definitely not worth the money.”
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause the color and the image layer of LVP to fade. Many Karndean tile reviews highlight this negative aspect of the floors.
If you buy these floors, I’d urge you to install these floors only in suitable locations, as listed in the terms and conditions for that specific product.
Is Karndean Flooring Suitable for Bathrooms?
Karndean floors are applicable for bathrooms, as long as you’re aware of their limitations.
The rigid core in these vinyl planks is sensitive to fluctuations in temperature. The plank may warp and crack under pressure if the temperature fluctuates significantly.
The Korlok range is suitable for above and below grade floors. Since they’re waterproof, they’re also suitable for basements and bathrooms!
You shouldn’t install these floors in consistently wet rooms or shower cubicles. While the floors are waterproof, long exposure to standing water will cause them to warp.
With proper installation, Karndean vinyl plank flooring is appropriate for bathrooms.
Is Karndean Flooring Noisy?
All Karndean flooring ranges offer noise cancellation as they feature a layered vinyl composition and acoustic foam backing.
The soft acoustic foam backing, without any underlay, provides a softer floor that absorbs most of the ambient noise.
Do Karndean Floors Scratch?
Karndean advertises its flooring ranges as scratch-resistant, and usually lives up to the claim. Their floors come with a wear layer that offers protection against scratches and scuff marks.
Vinyl plank flooring is more scratch-resistant than some types of hardwood and stone flooring. With proper usage and care, all floors can withstand scratches and scuff marks.
If you want to learn more about luxury vinyl plank flooring, check out my full guide to LVP! If you’ve used Karndean’s vinyl plank flooring, tell us about your experience in the comments.
Karndean’s design strips function just like their planks. They’re resistant to staining, cracking or fading.
The design strips are nonporous and are available in many colors and shades. These are available in widths of three millimeters and ten millimeters.
You can also use the three millimeter grout strips to add texture and different designs to your Karndean floor.
They’re compatible with all Karndean ranges, except Van Gogh, and come in a range of colors.
Feature strips are solid colors and have minimal texture and design. They’re five millmeters wide and compatible with all Karndean ranges, except Van Gogh..

That’s not to say that stone-look vinyl is preferable in all cases. Certain types of stone are highly durable and easy to clean.

Vinyl plank flooring is more scratch-resistant than some types of hardwood and stone flooring. With proper usage and care, all floors can withstand scratches and scuff marks.

Karndean’s LVP by Looks
Karndean’s vinyl flooring mainly looks like wood and stone. Their high-quality image layers are on top of the vinyl plank flooring, right beneath the wear layer.
Vinyl flooring offers many advantages over real wood and stone floors.
Wood
Vinyl flooring that resembles real wood flooring doesn’t have the same drawbacks as hardwood.
Each vinyl plank replicates actual wood in color and grain patterns – they even incorporate knots.
Karndean has many wood-themed vinyl flooring designs, all varying between light and dark wood tones.
Benefits Over Traditional Natural Wood Flooring
Karndean’s wood vinyl floors have many advantages over real wood flooring, including:
If you sweep and vacuum regularly, they’re easier to clean.
They’re easy to maintain.
The color and design don’t fade away as quickly as those of hardwood.
The floors are scratch-resistant, so you don’t need to sand and refinish them.
The wear layer protects the vinyl plank flooring from scuffs, scratches, and spills , making it ideal for high foot traffic areas..
Stone
Karndean also produces vinyl plank flooring that resembles natural stone. The designs vary from modern tiles to intricate limestone.
Each vinyl plank has the color and patterns of real stone.
Benefits Over Traditional Stone Flooring
Stone-look vinyl floors have some advantages over conventional stone flooring:
These floors provide warmth whereas traditional stone floors tend to be cold to touch.
Unlike natural stone, these floors have a wear layer that protects them from scratches and scuff.
As these floors are easy to clean and maintain, it makes it easier for individuals with pets and children.
Some stone floors are prone to cracking and wobbling. Karndean’s stone-themed vinyl floors are durable and resilient.
That’s not to say that stone-look vinyl is preferable in all cases. Certain types of stone are highly durable and easy to clean.
Design Components
The Karndean Designflooring range is fully customizable. You can choose designs, styles, borders, and other personalizations to make your floors unique.
Karndean Designflooring ranges include many different personalized aspects which we’ll discuss in the following sections.
Design Strips
Design strips are long tile pieces that sit alongside Karndean’s planks and tiles.
You can use them to add borders to the edges of the room or place them between planks or tiles.

Design Features
With the help of design features, you can add personalized medallions to the HD image layer on Karndean Designflooring.
Karndean offers six standard medallions, including cartwheels, stars, galaxies, and Celtic designs.
Your retailer can help you to design a custom medallion that adds a personal touch to your beautiful floor.

You can also use the three millimeter grout strips to add texture and different designs to your Karndean floor.

Luxury vinyl flooring consists of several layers joined together in one plank.
The topmost layers consist of an image layer that replicates wood or stone flooring, and a wear layer that protects the floor.
Karndean has six flooring ranges or collections.
The Korlok Select range is a rigid flooring type with a 5G® locking mechanism feature that allows one to securely install these floors.
Korlok Reserve has the same structure and durability as Korlok Select. It has the standard 2G locking mechanism, rather than 5G®.
With a 3 mm thickness and 30 mil wear layer, the Art Select range is durable and scratch-resistant.
The Da Vinci range has realistic designs that look like artwork. It resembles either wood or stone, but has some of the most convincing real stone imagery found on vinyl plank flooring.

What Is Karndean Flooring?
Situated in the United Kingdom, Karndean Flooring is a premium flooring company. It focuses solely on the production of LVP (luxury vinyl plank flooring), and has done so since its inception in 1973.

Many contractors Use Karndean vinyl floors, and their products are renowned for being waterproof and scratch-resistant.
Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring (LVP)
Karndean’s luxury vinyl planks consist of several waterproof layers.
The topmost layer is an invisible PVC embossed wear layer. It is around 20 mils thick and protects the floors from scratches.
Pro Tip: One mil is equal to a single layer of protective coating. A wear-layer that’s 20 mils thick has twenty independent protective coats. The more mils a wear layer has, the more protective it becomes.
The second layer is a high-quality image layer that replicates real wood or marble.
Below the image layer, lies a rigid core layer. It’s made with Karndean’s proprietary K-core technology, and adds structural support. The core is a type of limestone-infused plastic.
The final layer in the vinyl flooring is the foam layer that acts as an underlayment. This layer also adds soundproofing and gives the floor a softer feel under your feet.
You can use one of three installation methods for Karndean’s vinyl plank flooring, namely:
Glue-down
Loose lay
Click lock.
The method you use will vary with the vinyl flooring range you buy. Not all of the ranges are equipped for all three installation methods.

Decorative Borders
You can use decorative borders to add a finishing touch to your Karndean Designflooring.
The base color matches the flooring color, and a contrasting color highlights the border design.
These decorative borders are available for all seven ranges, and Karndean offers numerous colors and designs.

Decorative Borders
You can use decorative borders to add a finishing touch to your Karndean Designflooring.
The base color matches the flooring color, and a contrasting color highlights the border design.
These decorative borders are available for all seven ranges, and Karndean offers numerous colors and designs.
